Some weeks I know exactly what I’m going to write about in these columns. A big, exciting program coming up or a new staff member to profile and this thing pretty much writes itself. Other weeks, I open the Google Doc tab, start typing some inane observation about Library Life, delete it, start a different project, finish the project, look back at the empty page, type half a sentence, delete it, start another project… and before you know it, I missed my deadline! At this point, you’ve probably deduced that this here column is one of the “other week” ones.
Right now it’s about a day after said deadline and I need to type up SOMEthing, ANYthing, to… to do what, exactly? To justify this column’s existence? But if I have nothing to say, then why write one in the first place? It’s one thing to write about nothing, I can’t imagine how it feels to read about nothing. Sorry!
It’s not like there’s nothing happening here. There’s a meeting with dozens of attendees going on in the community room, cabinets are (loudly and excitedly) being hung in our story room, and a few different families are playing with toys and looking for books. In many ways, this atypical Saturday at the library is business as usual. No programs are scheduled for this afternoon, but coming up next week we have Guided Meditation on Saturday morning, Storytime on Tuesday morning, After School programs on Tuesday and Thursday, an escape room for kids on Wednesday at 3:30, the second installment of the Book to Movie Club on Thursday evening, and a Breastfeeding Support Cafe on Friday afternoon. I guess I could have written about any of those, but feel like I’ve already done that in previous weeks.
With so much paperwork still left on my desk to do, spending any extra time on this column seems unnecessary. So do I submit this delete-worthy entry that, yet again, waxes poetic on the theory that I’m out of ideas or begin again, only to have my paperwork stack higher and higher? Well, if you’re reading this, then it’s very likely that I ran out of time and went with what I had ready. Perhaps next week I’ll know exactly what I’m going to write about. Here’s hoping for a big, exciting program or a new person to profile!
