If it feels like it’s been a while since we had an art show on display at the Hamilton Public Library, it’s because it has. WAY back in the ‘before times,’ of March 2020, we had an amazing display of quilts hung all around our Children’s room. Unfortunately, the pandemic and forced closing of our building really put a damper on that display, and due to the decrease in foot traffic and the inability to host artist receptions, it seems like no one has wanted to display anything on our walls since.
Well, all that changed this week, as we have a new exhibit for you to view, “Not Deep,” by Hamilton native Melissa Davies! Originally scheduled for display in May 2020, Davies’ vibrant and stylized mixed media work of all sizes and shapes is finally adorning our previously dull walls!
Davies works with mixed media in her own studio and with an array of painting challenges in the scenic shop at the Glimmerglass Festival, Cooperstown, NY. She holds a B.A. in art history from the University of California, Snta Barbara; a B.F.A. in painting from Syracuse University, and an M.A. in education from Claremont Graduate University. She received her scenic painting training from Cobalt Studio in White Lake, NY.
Special thanks to Elizabeth Douglas and Arts at the Palace for providing scenic painting space for ‘Not Deep,’ and to Scott Lewis for providing his deep expertise for this show. Lewis framed works, built supports, advised, and directed installation.
We are so excited to bring this exhibition to our community and look forward to working with more local artists in the future again. If you would like to display your work, email me at tolivera@midyork.org.
Thank you for reading and for getting vaccinated!
